HP Mini 210-1095NR 10.1-Inch Red Netbook - 9.75 Hours of Battery Life Customer Review

PLUSES: Takes 2gb memory module; SD card can be used for ReadyBoost; easy access to memory, PCI-e card slot, and hard drive via “pop off” bottom cover; available slot for PCI-e card (in my case, a Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator, mail order, but you may want to insert a 3G card etc.); MATTE SCREEN for glare free viewing; more ergonomic keyboard than most in this category; earphone jack is also compatible with “headsets” with combined stereo earphones and mono microphone; no bottom vent slots that are easy to block if set down on a carpet or other soft surface.

MINUSES: Shorter battery life (on this entry level 3 cell battery model); “standard” netbook screen resolution (there is an HP Mini 210 HD version available with a higher than normal resolution screen); “simpler, ” non-multi-gesture touch pad (but it works very well); “speed step” is not implemented, although the N450 Atom chip now supports it (see the Asus 1001p if you want this feature for extended battery life); fan runs a little more to circulate air, there are no bottom slots to pull air through; no stereo microphone slot.

Since these netbooks have a built-in microphone on the screen, and speakers under the keyboard, it’s easy to Skype on them without a headset in “speakerphone” mode.

On the horizon (next 3 months): N470 Atom processors running at 1.83 ghz instead of the N450 in the current models running at 1.66 ghz; but the fact that this one has a PCI-e card for the Broadcom Crystal HD card is probably more important than the upcoming boost in speed (which will also run the battery down more quickly).

INITIAL IMPRESSSIONS:

Prices have come down on the HP Mini 210 series at Amazon to the point where there is no reason to go with another maker (Acer is generally the price leader) unless you are looking for a particular feature (like wireles “n” instead of “g”, a 6 cell battery for the same price etc). As promised by the reviews I read, the HP Mini 210 is slightly better designed (keyboard doesn’t flex, keyboard is more ergonomic) and finished than its competition (I have owned Acer, Gateway, eMachines, and MSI Wind netbooks - no Asus so far).

The HP Mini 210 is also “cleaner” finished - no advertising stickers on the front panel below the keyboard, even the Win7 license sticker and other “bottom of computer” stickers are gone, the Win7 license sticker is inside the case (where it can’t get smudged, a big plus, should you set it down on a gob of jam on your breakfast counter).

I purchased this 3 cell battery model expressly to keep weight down and keep the case smaller (the 6 cell battery version isn’t flush to the case). I got to save as a result, which is an extra bonus. The old HP Mini 110 was rated at 3.75 hours with a 3 cell, with the new chipset in this one, battery life jumps to 4.25 rated hours. Keep in mind reading the NY Times on line with the screen dimmed will give much better battery life than watching transcoded h.264 videos with full screen brightness (in non-geek speak, reading is less taxing than movie watching).

Please note this has a MATTE screen. Not impressive in a showroom, where glossy screens just seem to sparkle, but MUCH better for actually watching video and working, no reflections to reduce image quality. Matte screens are actually rarer than the glossy variety - most Acers are glossy, the Asus 1001p (nearest competitor to this HP Mini 210 “no frills” edition) is matte too.

Manufacturers approach upgrades 3 ways: the Acers generally have little hatches held down by screws and snaps which allow access to the memory module, available PCI-e slot, and hard drive; MSI has no hatches but lots of screws (to remove the entire back panel) and an ominous “warranty voided!” sticker; and this HP seeming has no hatches OR screws.

Fortunately before this arrived I was reading the HP on-line documentation (which is much better than Acer’s and eMachines) and they showed how to pop off the bottom panel to access the memory module, PCI-e slot, and harddrive - it’s pretty easy to do, and I marveled at HP’s design team when I snapped it back together. The PCI-e slot, BTW, is included in most netbooks so you can install a 3G telephone wireless card; some netbooks have two such slots; some have a slot shared with the wireless LAN card; but this HP has a single, uncluttured slot and I used mine for the Broadcom Crystal HD accelerator card. This card is designed to accelerate certain video streams (but not all); it is supposed to work with Windows Media Player if it is decoding H.264 video (the current “standard”); with Hulu and other sites running Flash for video support (but not too well yet, Flash 10.1 has not yet been released and is still buggy); and with some DVD/BluRay software player programs. For mail order from Hong Kong (off eBay) I was willing to give it a try.

This HP accepted a standard netbook memory module upgrade to 2gb without a hitch - no BIOS adjustments required. Check crucial dot com for memory specs; usually, but not always, when Amazon tells you other customers ordered a particular memory module to go with a particular netbook, you will be ok.

The fit and finish, ergonomics, and software welcome windows on the HP are much nicer than on any of the Acer variants (Acer makes Gateway and eMachines too) or the MSI’s I have - even the keyboard is easier to use, although still shrunken. The mini-led’s (really tiny dots) on the wireless function key on the top row of the keyboard, on the power slide switch on the side of the keyboard, and on the other side of the computer to indicate hard drive activity, each looks very classy. Be careful about pressing the top row function keys - unlike other netbooks, where you have to press the Fn activator key next to the space bar to access netbook functions (like wireless on or off, speakers on or off, volume, brightness) on this HP the top row keys default to netbook functions, and you have to use the Fn key next to the space bar to use them as normal F1-F12 function keys - while trying to hit F11 to maximize a browser window, I accidentally turned off my wi-fi.

I would have preferred to have the power switch under the cover, where it can’t accidentally be activated - it is on the right side of the case instead.

The touchpad works well - I don’t have my usual problem accidentally clicking when I meant to slide.

Although Pg Up and Pg Dwn aren’t labeled on the arrow keys, they are actually there, and activated by the Fn key near the space bar. The arrow keys themselves are laid out nicely in inverted “T” style.

Initial set up operations and downloards were quite zippy, felt quicker than on a 1gb Acer ao532h I just returned (but that may have been a function of the limitaton to 1gb on that Acer). Here are the Windows Experience Index numbers for this HP with an SD card inserted in the card reader and set up for ReadyBoost:

Processor, calculations per second: 2.4
Memory operations: 4.6
Graphics, Aero Desktop: 3.1
Gaming Graphics: 3.0
Disk operations: 5.3

Processor power # is the same as on my recent Walmart special eMachines 250 (N270 chipset, same as Aspire ao250 etc.), as are all the other numbers EXCEPT Graphics, Aero - Aero graphics on this new chipset jump from 2.1 to 3.1, a sizeable increase. (This number is not influenced by the Broadcom Crystal HD accelerator card I added, it is the same number I saw on an HP Mini 210 at Costco).

So basically the new chipset, just introduced in December 2009, mainly just saves battery power, with some small performance increases - except for the graphics, which is one generation better than the last GMA 950 processors but not capable of DirectX functions (you have to get a machine with GMA 4500 or an Ion for that). (FWIW the new N450 chips also run Win7 64 bit, and have Speed Step instructions for changing the clock speed to save power on netbooks that have software support built-in).

I don’t intend to load a lot of programs on this netbook, so the 160 gb hard drive is fine for me. Part of that space is used by HP for a restore partition (in lieu of providing restore disks), and that restore partition, which mostly goes to waste, is thankfully smaller than usual.

If you intend to haul around a lot of converted video or lossless music (FLAC or Apples loss-less) or photos, you should definitely pop the extra for the 250gb harddrive editions. My personal strategy is to use an external USB hard drive to hold my “library” and just download to the netbook as needed, so I am not as sensitive as some to hard drive sizes, and can remember then an 80gb hard drive in a laptop was “big.”

Finally, there is one very nice “feature” on this netbook that the others I have seen don’t have - it doesn’t have any vent slots on the bottom. It is engineered to vent solely through the side vent. This means you can actually set it on your lap or a soft surface without blocking any vents and overheating the unit. With our other netbooks and laptops we are scrupulous about placing them on a laptop board or cutting board, to keep access to the air vents open, but on this one we don’t have to worry about that. I’m good about keeping air vents open, but if you have kids who are going to set a netbook down on a plush carpet or on the bed, the HP Mini 210 is a better choice - they only have to keep the one set of side vents free and clear. Conversely, with no bottom vents, the bottom tends to get hot, but this does not bother me.

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1001P-PU17-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook - Up to 11 Hours of Battery Life Customer Review

I really like the Asus 1001p. I am typing this review on it and the non-”chiclet” keyboard feels big and spacious. Very easy to type on. I actually thought I’d miss the chiclet keyboard quite a bit, but nope. Not at all. All the keys seem to have great travel and feel sturdy, including F9 (which someone else mentioned. The “carbon fiber” treatment on the exterior shell is nice but not as readily visible as the photos on Amazon would have you to believe. It is actually quite a bit more subtle in real world lighting. It is nice though. This unit is slick. The carbon fiber look is also there on the palm rest, though not on the bottom. Screen is bright and crisp. I installed Hulu desktop and found that full screen video is choppy unless on the lowest quality setting. This might just be a result of the resources that the Hulu Desktop app is using since it requires 2GB RAM and I only have 1GB in my unit.

The hard drive comes pre-partioned into 2 local drives, C and D. C being 100GB and D being 122GB. Not a fan of this setup, but will go with it for now. I figured the Hard Drive would be partitioned since one of the advertised features is that by holding F9 during boot up you can reimage back to factory default. The unit came sort of no frills with only the battery, install CD, adapter, and warranty card in the box. Installing many programs on it under windows 7 starter has been a breeze so far.

One major gripe about the unit is that since it has such a heavy 6 cell battery that is all the way to the rear of the unit, I found the computer wanting to tilt backwards, its front feet lifting off my lap quite often, especially if the screen is pushed further away from you. This wasn’t too big a deal if you have it on an absolutely flat surface, but I can see how if you are lap typing on this puppy that it would be an issue. The netbook is seriously weighted towards the rear hinge forcing you to cheat the screen angle forward in order to compensate. This gives you a slightly less viewable angle. Prior to purchasing the 1001p, I had taken a look at the HP Mini 210 and decided against it primarily because its 6 cell battery extends out and down from the rear hinge area. But now I see why their engineers chose this route, it forces the laptop back into a typeable position. I almost wouldn’t mind that sort of a design now.

First full day of usage I got around 7 off/on hours of battery life with about 20% remaining. Not sure if I’ll get close to the “asterix-promised” 11 hours of battery life as my battery meter seems to tell me it will be closer to 7-8 hours. I found that if you hit Fn + Spacebar, you can shuttle through the various Asus powersaving modes (S.H.E. - Google it). Only time will tell how much they add to system performance and battery life. Overall I’m pleased with the unit. My biggest gripes are the rear-weighted design and the pre-partitioned hard drive. Other than that, I think it’s a fine machine. I found the trackpad to be zippy and quite responsive. I have yet to have any cursor-jumping issues. Plus the multitouch scrolling is as smooth as butter.

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1001P-MU17-BU 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook - Up to 11 Hours of Battery Life Customer Review

The ASUS Eee PC 1001P is pretty sharp. Visually, I saw pics online with the carbon fiber finish and the glossy, looks like the final product is glossy, at least for the blue model. Screen is matte, for better visibility in areas with glare.

It’s light, ASUS power management utility is pretty smart as well. Power supply is nice and small too. Keyboard is really good for a netbook.

I only have a few complaints.

Hardware problem: Occasionally the mouse touch pad does not respond, not sure if it is because of HDD caching or a bug in the device driver. Needs to be looked into.

Software problem: Windows 7 UI is netbook unfriendly.

Windows starter UI 7 is a step backwards. Make no mistake this is basically Vista revisited. There’s no more Windows ‘classic’ view, folder views are a little weird even when you do get back to ‘classicy’ view. The new start menu is the real party pooper. Takes up 25% of your screen no matter if you have 1 item in it or 100, if there is one implementation where that is a horrible design flaw, it would be on a netbook with a small screen. Also some install bloat. Windows Live “Essentials”, the goofy Adobe suite (replace with FoxIt Reader), starter version of M$ Office, and if you want to uninstall it is a big pain in the neck because there are so many separate install components to manually uninstall one at a time… So instead of 10 minutes, it takes almost an hour to junk it and install Open Office.

As for the broken parts of Starter Windows, I don’t think it matters that much in a netbook, but time will tell. No custom wallpaper. I thought it would bother me but honestly the screen is so small the only time I see my wallpaper is during system boot up. Once there is Linux support I’d like to see how it runs under both OS’s. But seems like Asus has made a nice product for 300 bones.

If the mouse pointer didn’t hang and Microsoft didn’t take up 25% of my display with their “genius” start menu it’d be a slam dunk.

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-MU17-WT 10.1-Inch White Netbook - Up to 11 Hours of Battery Life Customer Review

Couldn’t install ubuntu netbook remix yet. Keyboard didn’t work and there was some kind of kernel error. Will probably be a workaround soon since these netbooks are popular.

100 gb in drive C:\ and 122 gb in drive D:\ is what i showed in windows 7. ubuntu disk partition manager said something like 100gb windows 7 loader, 10 gb windows vista loader for some reason. Probably should still wipe and reinstall.

Didn’t come with much bloat. Just an trend micro, microsoft office+language packs, chicken invaders 2(?!) and other oberon media crap. A bunch of the windows updates were annoyingly for the old version of office so do yourself a favor and delete it first. The touchpad is awesome. Case looks shiny and hard instead of bland and plastic.

HP mini HD [...] with broadcom vid accelerator and better screen res support was my first choice but comes with 3 cell battery, no claim of battery life and they tried to charge me [...] shipping and [...] tax. Got this instead with free shipping+no tax.

Seems to still kill the battery over the long term having it in the laptop while the power supply is on. Better to only use the battery when needing it and let it completely drain out. Not going to test battery yet for that reason. Edit: Yes I know the li-ion batteries shouldn’t be discharged all the way. The batteries have something to prevent them from being completely discharged so you don’t have to worry about using it until the laptop turns off. It will have a decreased permanent loss the less capacity you leave it with after detaching from the computer. It also decays more slowly in colder temperature so if you’re hard core about not wanting to get a [...] replacement in a couple of years leave it in your freezer while not in use.

Webcam has smooth framerate, audio is pretty decent. It’s very quiet, still has fan on the left but not loud. Can’t complain about speed. Boots fast and most programs run fine. The brightness is good, I wish there was a setting between the first and second brightness though.

Powerchord and USBs grind into place. It’s really a tight fit so it takes a lot to accidentally dislodge them. At the same time it makes me feel sorry for asus because people of walmart will not plug it in all the way and RMA, can already feel it coming. My other laptop would get really hot putting in on the bed or carpet but this stays the same temperature.

I don’t think there’s anything different as far as hardware in the 14 hour asus eee, or if there is it’s something to better limit cpu speed that works in conjunction to with the windows 7 software, and probably wouldn’t work on linux. This version also doesn’t have bluetooth support, but who really cares, it’s not a phone and bluetooth just wastes more power enabled. The [...] versions just have a 160gb drive, for the [...] it’s better to get this.

Can’t complain too much about the keyboard. I like the up/down keys doubled as pageup/pagedown. There’s none of those useless custom nonstandard keys like a picture of mail, the internet, music etc at the top a lot of laptops have that I never use. There was a lot of programs on startup, most were asus and hardware stuff but I still had to disable half, and windows 7 has an insane amount of useless services but everything was running pretty well. I recommend recommend setting it to classic theme, windows key+break -> advanced system settings, performance settings, and se4t to adjust for best performance.

The laptop scored a 2.4 out of 7.9 in the windows experience index.

My last laptop was asus g1 1680 x 1050 native res on a 15.4″ screen. The letters are tiny because the resolution is so high, and changing it just makes things blurred looking, so using this tiny netbook is actually LESS of an eye strain. Might actually make it my primary laptop.
