I chose this Acer 11.6 inch laptop over a netbook, because I wanted a small, lightweight form factor, but with real computing power, so I could do more than just surf the net.

Pros:
Lightweight, vey portable.
Intel Core 2 Duo processor much more powerful than Atom processors in netbooks.
Plenty of RAM and large hard drive for an ultralight.
Crisp, sharp display; 1366 X 768 resolution provides nice coverage without too much scrolling.
Wireless range is good (using 802.11g, haven’t tried Draft-N yet).
Comfortably-sized keyboard for such a small laptop.
Touchpad is smooth and accurate; multi-touch takes some getting used to.
Battery life is excellent! (I haven’t tested it for 8 hours straight, but using it periodically throughout the day, I think it would come close. Laptop Magazine’s test indicated 8 hrs, 45 min. on their standard battery test.
Plenty of ports - 3 USB, HDMI!!, multi-card reader.
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit; I like this OS much better than Vista.

Cons:
Bottom left side gets fairly warm, but I can use it directly on my lap without any discomfort.

Not really a con, but something to be aware of: no optical drive; but that shouldn’t be expected in an ultralight like this. I bought an external USB DVD drive which works fine when I need one.

I’ve had this laptop for about a month now, with no issues (hardware or software). That means I also haven’t needed to use Acer’s technical support, so I can’t comment on that.

I would recommend this laptop to anyone looking for an ultrportable with more computing power than a netbook.

Acer Aspire AS7740-6656 17.3-Inch HD Display Laptop (Blue) Customer Review

I usually buy my electronics through [...]. Newegg didn’t have this model so Amazon got my business on this one and I’m glad that I happened to stumble across it.

I wanted 2 things in my PC. One was a large screen and the other was speed. The 17.3″ screen is perfect. Not as bulky as an 18.4″ but larger than a 15.6″, so it’s a good compromise. The new i5 chip is great. I didn’t see the point in buying a PC with the old INTEL chips or AMD. I buy a new PC maybe every 6 years or so and considering I could have spent a lot more on a model by another manufacturer with the older chipsets it just makes more sense to buy this….which is really what makes this PC such an excellent purchase.

Usually when you find something that’s a good buy you’re making numerous compromises. That’s not the case with this Acer. From the new chip to the 500 gb hard drive to the 4 USB’s, card reader, VGA, HDMI, and dual-layer drive it’s top-notch and is of an excellent quality build. Nothing feels cheap.

I have always despised notebook PC keyboards and anticipated using an external keyboard. Well, surprise surprise surprise….with the touchpad turned off, I find this keyboard works great. The keys are a good size for my stubby fingers, I don’t mistype on it and find that the straight down touch you use, instead of the slightly angular touch I like on the external keyboards, works perfectly fine. The keyboard has a great feel to it as well. Rest your palms on the lower portion and go to work. I won’t need an external keyboard with this PC. I definitely give it an A.

The screen is excellent. It’s very sharp, equally bright and does justice to all my pics. Video is excellent and although it does not do 1080p HD, it does do lower resolution HD perfectly fine and on the 17 inch screen it looks fantastic. In fact, watching YouTube or other videos in full-screen mode looks good, but will look better when these on-line videos start sending out higher resolution streams than they do now. DVDs are excellent.

When I made my purchase decision I had looked at 6 or 7 other brands and found that the ACER beat them all on price when you compared the options it came with. The biggest dilemma for me was to get a model with a blu-ray drive and an i3 chip, or to go with the much faster i5 and not have blu-ray. For me, the best decision was to take the faster chip. I believe it would likely provide for smoother video and graphics overall and I could always add an external blu-ray drive later, if I really wanted to.

The only other factor about this PC which concerned me was that this model uses the integrated INTEL video card. I have used PCs with that in the past and found that I preferred having a separate graphics card. But my research indicated that INTEL is using a different methodology on the motherboards that have the new i series chips so I decided to go with it. So far I am pleased, but since I have not used one with a separate graphics card, I cannot say whether or not the separate graphics card offers any advantage in terms of performance. My guess is that a separate graphics card with 2 meg of dedicated RAM in addition to the 4 meg the system comes with might perform better under certain situations, however the software for this PC automatically dedicates 1,756k to video memory of the main 4mb and it’s all DDR3 so I wonder if the difference would really be that noticeable. The additional price would be though, so I think this might well be the better purchase.

One disappointment…the sound on the speakers is very low, and since it’s Dolby Home Theater with Virtual Surround Sound I expected more volume from the PC itself. Internet radio is hard to hear, but if I watch a video and use Windows Media Player or Winamp, that software boosts the sound a bit more. I use external speakers whenever I can and will continue to do so with this, but these internal speakers really are low volume.

If you’re in the market for a new notebook this is a great PC. It’s a great buy too. To borrow a phrase from a mortgage broker who advertises locally here….”It’s the biggest no-brainer in the history of earth.”

Ok, I admit to being a techno junkie. I currently own five working laptops, and have bought (God only knows) how many desktops since the very first ones came out. I own HP, Gateway, Dell, Compaq, and two Acers. Without a doubt, Acer is on its way to becoming king of the laptop/netbook market! They produce a remarkable product at an extremely competitive price. I tested out every laptop at Office Depot, before buying this one for only 9. What sold me on this model was the incredibly brilliant screen and the amazing audio output with certified Dolby surround sound. It doesn’t sound exactly like a home theater, but it’s a vast improvement. Laptops are notorious for low volume and poor sound quality, so this model blew me away in a side-by-side comparison with other machines. I absolutely love Windows 7. The demo on the computer makes it easy to learn the new features, and lots of fun to play with. This machine is smoking fast, has an attractive design, and a wonderful multigesture touchpad. The ease with which you can enlarge text is a great convenience. I would have prefered a smaller, lighter model without the numeric keypad, but you can’t have it all, so I sacrificed small size for what you get in this machine. (Anyways, I already own the Acer Aspire netbook.) And this screen size and aspect ratio is great for watching movies. Probably the biggest con with this machine is the somewhat poor battery life, but again, you can’t have everything for such a low price, so I just keep it plugged in most of the time. Overall, it’s the most enjoyable laptop I have ever owned.

So what is this, a netbook or a notebook? It doesn’t really matter what you call it. It’s slightly too big to fit the netbook category, but not much. It also packs more punch than a netbook, and comes with Windows 7 Home Premium, whereas netbooks are shipped with the Starter Edition. That doesn’t mean it can play the latest 3D games, but it’s good enough to use on a daily basis. Open too many programs at once, and you may have some slight delays. But for this price, I can’t complain.

Have had this for less than a week but played around with it extensively. Graphics and full-sized keyboard are great and the battery life is fantastic. It was running on the battery for 8 hours normal usage and 5 hours viewing streaming content that output beautifully to my tv via hdmi port.

Minus given in value as price could be lower since you have to purchase an external optical drive. Negative is speaker volume is too low even when maxed out. I’m a musician and have very fine hearing. I found it difficult to clearly hear streaming media. I have ordered headphones and am looking forward to hearing the Dolby Sound Room output through them.

Originally planned to buy an Asus netbook and upgrade RAM/Harddrive but this system has everything- without upgrading. Plus, Intel Core 2 Duo processor is faster than Atom or Celeron. It gets a 3.2 score for system performance. The integrated graphics brings the score down to 3.2 overall with individual scores of: Processor=4.1; RAM=4.8;Hard Disk=5.4; and Graphics= 3.2. That is a higher score than my 17″ Vista Acer Laptop.

This small package is a powerful system. I use it in my home theater and for traveling. I love this little pc perhaps more than the fancy desktops that I have built myself.

I have the model Aspire 5738Z, and it is excellent. I have had it for over 4 months now, use it every day for online University and it has never failed me. Smooth running, no freezeups. The number pad next to the keyboard is an excellent addition as I use it for my math classes. The price is right, the quality is excellent.

Sound is very good, keyboard and keys are comfortable, webcam is awesome. Battery life is as described, even though I mostly use it plugged in. I am running Windows Vista and have no issues. Love this computer.

Ok so its been a while since i had a new laptop but i think this one does what i need and it does it very well. the speeds are snappy, the longest waiting time i had was for windows to remove all the bundle software that came with the laptop (seriously, who uses McAfee still?).

Windows gave it an overall score of 4.0 and the reason for that is because the ATI Radeon in this laptop is designed more so for viewing video (HD at that) which displays great on its crisp LED screen. if you find yourself being a media hog i would recommend at least a network/external drive or upgrading the one with it, it comes with 320 (good for moderate users) but media people on a budget will find that they can fill that up in a moment. I have yet to test it with games but according to several reviews they say that the video card should be able to play games like modern warfare 2, on its lowest settings.

The Multi-touch track pad is something i have yet to find a true use for, sure you can start in the corner and spiral around like an ipod to scroll down or up.. but why? there is a built in scrolling bar. Ok so you can pinch in and push out to zoom in and out… most people already know that the scroll bar does the same thing… seems more like a gimmick then something useful even the photo rotating command feels awkward to perform.

all in all its a good laptop for the price, not for gaming or long flights (average battery time i get is about 2.5-3 hours), but it fits that niche for people who need to have a big screen for either media or for viewing a lot of documents.

Purchased here (via J&R), great price on a bluray packing 15″ laptop. 16:9 screen is great for watching movies. Screen looks great, watched Ratattouie (Pixar) DVD and The Bank Job bluray. Both movies looked great. Sound is Dolby Digital, and sounds great on headphones. Built in speakers sound terrible. Via even a cheap pair of headphones, the sound is superb. I heard sounds on Ratattouie that I never heard before.

Here’s some good news: The HDMI port supports both video (duh) and Audio! Yay! When connecting the HDMI to my receiver, the ATI video driver popped up a warning that Audio is not supported. But clicking “help” opened a page basically saying that this is a generic message to warn users that a video card prior to Radeon 2xxx series does not support audio over HDMI, but anything later (including the one on this laptop, the 4200) DOES in fact support Audio. And a quick test (of those two movies) proved that it was Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. The included movie player from Acer sent 1080p and 5.1 sound out the HDMI, and it seems that MS Media player did too. So no additional software is needed to output to 5.1 with both BR and DVD. One final note on movie watching: The Acer movie player worked flawlessly, but when I tried MS Media Player, it stuttered often and was annoying. Figures. So stick with the included (and set as default player) Acer movie player.

Gaming is NOT recommended. I grabbed the first game disc I had lying around that I had both the disc AND the install key (always hard to find both when you need them), and it was Call of Duty World at War. It was awful. At the default 1024×768, it was an unplayable slide show, and at the lowest settings (640×480 and every possible feature set to low) it was still an unplayable 5-10 fps. So that was disappointing, but not a show stopper as we already have two high-end gaming computers in the house, and really what did I expect for under 6 Benjamins?

I purchased this primarily to have a portable Bluray playing laptop and it fits the bill perfectly. As of this writing (2/1/2010), it is the cheapest Bluray playing laptop on Earth (or that I could find anyway, and believe me I spent/wasted a lot of time searching!).

I have another 2-year old Acer Aspire, also a 15″ widescreen, that is heavier with a worse keyboard than this model. I really am happy with the fit and finish of this model. The added keypad makes the keyboard sit left-of-center, which takes a little getting used to, as does the multi-touch touchpad, which is sensitive and hitting it accidently with a 2nd finger causes the mouse to jump around. The vertical scrolling feature on the right of the pad isn’t very accurate (had the same problem on my older Acer). We use Toshiba laptops at work and their scrolling feature is definitely better.

Some other non-issues: not many stickers. Not much bloatware at all. Comes with MS Works SE, which DOES read and write word and excel files (you just can’t set those as the default save/open option). Works SE is advertised based but it gives you the option to purchase the non-ad version. MS Office Student is 60 day trial. The 320GB drive is a single partition (yay!).

That’s about it. A great deal on a bluray laptop that works great.

The Basics

• Hard Drive: The 40 GB Enhanced IDE hard drive is on the small side compared to other notebooks. However, it does offer a decent enough capacity for storing documents and productivity software for road warriors–but not enough for much multimedia storage.
• Processor: The 1.0 Ghz Pentium M processor is at the low end of speeds compared with other Centrino notebooks (with current speed topping out at 1.7 GHz). Because of its design, the Intel Pentium M gets more done per clock tick than a Mobile Intel Pentium 4, thus providing the discrepency in GHz measurement (i.e., 1.7 versus 3.2). The Pentium M processor is designed specifically for low-power mobile usage, and it features the latest in power-saving technologies–ensuring you push your battery and productivity to the max. It has a front-side bus (FSB) of 400 MHz and a 1 MB L2 cache.
• Memory: The 512 MB of built-in memory (DDR SDRAM) is a good start for power users. It has two memory slots in total, with a maximum memory expansion up to 2 GB (2 x 1024 MB).
• CD/DVD Drive: This TravelMate C110 does not include an optical CD or DVD drive.
• Keyboard & Mouse: The TravelMate C110 comes with an Electromagnetic Resonance (EMR) stylus for input onto the tablet screen. The standard keyboard also includes 12 function keys, 4 cursor keys, and 5 easy launch buttons (Internet, email with LED, wireless on/off, and 2 user-programmable buttons). It also has a touchpad with 4-way Internet scroll key.

Sound and Graphics
The 10.4-inch LCD offers 1024 x 768 native resolution and it rotates to convert from notebook mode to tablet mode. Video is powered by an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 card with 64 MB of video RAM. It also has an sound card that’s integrated into the main board, and offers built-in stereo speakers.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
This Travelmate C110 model has an integrated 802.11g (or 54g) wireless LAN, which is quickly becoming the most popular wireless standard and is compatible with 802.11b connections as well. You get a smallish range of external connections, including:

This little computer replaces my Laptop, my Palm, and my Franklin Planner. It is very light and surpisingly resilient. The wireless features are fabulous. It is a pain to have to plug in the external CDRW/DVD drive I have (it has its own power cord …), but I use the drive rarely. A USB drive is great for external strage and date transfer. The keyboard is full-size as far as key-size, but condensed - Home, End, and Number Pad are Fn keys. I am astounded by the accuracy with which my written notes are converted to type. I love this thing - and it turns heads!

I’ve had this computer for a couple of days now and it’s great. I recently bought an Acer Revo 3600 and liked it so much, when my laptop died I decided to check out their other products. I bought it when it was 9 and couldn’t find anything close to its specs (which I think speak for themselves) at that price point. It worked right out of the box…no hassles whatsoever. It’s very fast, but then again I’ve been using a 4 year old Dell, and I really like Windows 7. I would have given it 5 stars except for a couple of things that I find a bit annoying, but these are personal preferences. The big thing is that because it has a numeric keypad, the keyboard is shifted awkwardly to the left. The first 2 days I had it, I kept hitting all the wrong buttons, but I’m starting to get used to it. Another is that the right and left click mouse buttons on the touchpad have been combined into a single bar (click on right side for right click, left side for left click). It feels a bit stiff/hard to depress and, because of the aforementioned awkward shift, I frequently hit it too close to the middle which doesn’t accomplish anything. Also, the cover is very shiny and shows every fingerprint, but it’s hard to find a laptop today that doesn’t have this feature. Overall, it’s a great laptop.
